Shri Brahmadeva and the fiery pillar
One day, Brahma, the Creator, and Vishnu, the Preserver, were arguing about which of them was the greater. Brahma said, “I am the Creator, there would be no world without me!” Vishnu responded, “You may create the world, but it is I who preserve it – I am the greater!” Suddenly, there appeared an endless fiery pillar – a Lingam of Shri Shiva – without beginning or end. It went up and up and up further than they could see, and it went deep, deep into the ground. They decided that Vishnu would try to find the end of this fiery pillar deep in the earth, and Brahma would try to find the end that went far up into the heavens: Whoever found the end would be the greater Deity. Vishnu transformed himself into a boar (a wild pig) and burrowed into the Earth saying “I will find the origin of this Lingam”. Brahma called his vehicle, the swan, and together they flew higher and higher into the heavens saying “I shall find the end!”. After years beyond counting, the boar finally returned to the surface of the Earth completely exhausted. He said, with humility, “I have failed. I could not find the beginning of the pillar of fire, this Lingam of Shri Shiva”. However, Brahma did not succeed in his mission either, but he said to himself, “I must not admit that I could not see the end”, and just at that moment he saw a Ketaki flower falling from the heavens down towards him. He was very excited, and said to the flower “You must come with me to Vishnu and say that I picked you from the top of the fiery pillar”. The flower replied that it would, just to please him. So Brahma and Vishnu met again and Brahma said, “I saw the end of the fiery Lingam: Look I have brought back this Ketaki flower as proof!” Vishnu joined his hands in namaste and said “I bow to you, Lord Brahma. You are the greatest of us all.” Suddenly, there was a great noise and flash of light, and Shri Shiva emerged from the centre of the column of fire. He was very angry, and Brahma went down on his knees before him. Shri Shiva said in a great voice, “Brahma, you have been dishonest! You have told a story that is not true. From now on, no-one shall honour you. No-one will perform Puja to you as Deity of the Swadisthana Chakra. They will say mantras to you, but not worship you in Puja.” Then he turned to the Ketaki flower and said in a stern voice, “You shall no longer be used for worship in my temple, you will no longer be considered as an auspicious flower!” Vishnu approached Shiva and said “You are without beginning and you have no end. It is out of ignorance that we made this competition to see which of us was the greatest. Please forgive us!” Shiva said “Dear Hari (Vishnu), you love the truth! I am very pleased with you. You will always be honoured as I am. You will have temples for people to worship you, festivals to celebrate you and the people will love you as they love me”.
There were two sugarcubes, loving each other, longing to be with each other, wishing to penetrate each other, wanting to be each other's heartbeat, dreaming of being one and never to be alone again. Often it felt as if it were that way, but only for as long as a few breaths, and then they felt separated again and full of yearning. "It is our bodies, always", said Sanaya and listened to his own, silent grief, "it is our bodies that separate us. We will never be one, we will always be two separate sugarcubes. And deep inside him there grew a feeling, not yet palpable, not yet audible; hidden and quietly it grew inside of him until it was there, until he knew: the whole universe is nothing but water, and I am nothing but a sugarcube. And if my beloved Ganga and me would be willing to dissolve in that water, then we would flow into one another, just as water that flows into water, and we would be one. And Sanaya spoke to Ganga: "If we could dissolve then we would be one. Now, forever and ever. "Nobody can do that", she answered, "and if it were possible, I would not want to do that. I love the way I am, that bodily form I lay down to bed and I rise with in the morning, that makes me feel the sun and that lets me recognize myself. Yes, I love this form, I love to see my reflection in the mirror, I love to be touched by you, and I love to touch you, taste you, love you." "Yes, you say that you love me. But if you can love me, you can also hate me, and perhaps more." "Maybe, who is able to love, is able to hate as well", he got for an answer, "but now I love to be my mouth. Say, where should I kiss you, if I were without a body?" And they kissed, wanted to possess more of each other, wanted to be part of each other, wanted to be each others heartbeat. But the beating of their hearts was without harmony and Sanaya asked himself sadly: "What is it that keeps me attached to my body?" "Your thought", he heard a voice say within himself. "Reach for the stars with your Spirit and not with your hands." "You believe, I could transcend my thoughts and yet be able to capture everything and understand?" "Yes, with your being, your Atma, your Spirit." "But why is this so difficult to do?" "There is a simple explanation. What, if I would take away your name from you. What would you do then? You would just pick a new one, even if it just were 'I'. You see, even your own name is a boundary for you. It is your ego that ties you down, that keeps you attached. Conditionings are the rope that ties you down with a thousand knots. Knots, that can only be untied through meditation. Without meditation you will not be able to make the step from illusion to truth; your time will be over before you would find the knowledge." "Alas, I tried, but it is hard." "No, it is not hard at all, believe me, it is simple and to do it is all it needs." "Ah! Simple is as simple does; to eat when you are hungry; to sleep when you are tired." "Or to sit down to empty yourself", the voice interrupted him. "Make room for new knowledge. Or do you believe that perfection is achieved through dreams? You use your fingers if you eat and your tongue. You never eat a few day's breakfast all at once, you do it day by day. You are used to eating, just not to emptying yourself.“ "So get used to eat, make it a habit of yours." "How can I make it a habit if I don't have the knowledge and the experience?" "I shall tell you. Listen. Sit down wherever it pleases you and place your open palms on your lap. And close your eyes. But if you see images or colors just like in a dream, then open them again, or you will loose yourself in dreams and images. And then from within let rest your attention on top of your head. Sit still and leave alone your thoughts, let them pass, until you are free of them. And then, when God's breath touches your breath, and when He blows from your head and hands as gentle breeze, then awakened is what they call the Kundalini, Ruach, or Prana, Holy Ghost. So many names it has been named, and every language has a word for it. And later on, when you are cleansed and pure and when you seek the highest with your senses, with your purest desires, when you live a life of purest deeds, then it does not matter anymore, if you stand, sit or lie down for meditation; for in the state of Samadhi, in thoughtless awareness there is nothing that thinks; and what thinks no more that has no rules and no time, but only awareness, bliss and joy and flows in God's own breath. There is only one state which is and will ever be forever: unity with God. The path is long, however, and cannot be travelled with pride and arrogance, with boasting and bragging. Only modesty and understandig will get you there, meditation is the step and the vehicle and the journey. Do what you have to do, and God, He will do the rest." And Sanaya went into meditation as he was told, but without pause thoughts emerged in his head. "You must not think that much", he heard the voice from within again. "Whatever you think is your own imagination, you are limited by your own imagination". "I just thought of my mother, shall I part with my thoughts of her?" "There is nothing to which you have to hold on to, because everything is within you, and you are within everything. Part with her and you will be one with her." "If I just part from everything, how can I be able to love?" "You sway like a tree in the wind, already feeling the one, but still living in the other. To which you bind yourself, that binds you. The reason is that your brain rules you with all that which is habit and conditioning. The truth takes away all ideas and thus changes your life. The highest knowledge you have yet to experience: There are three worlds in every being, future, past and present. And you also have to know that everything that happened from the beginning flows through your left side into your right brain; and that it is there where the power of desire works, since without desire all life, all movement comes to an end. But see, desire unfulfilled or impure spoils your soul. Left uncleansed this side becomes the world of dreamers and drifters, indolence becomes illness just as idleness. You think that you are diligent, but truly you are not the doer, and wherever you may get, you will arrive to late. You take pains, even you ask little only from yourself; you suffer and endure, and in your imagination still you love. Through your right side flows the variable future and ends in the left side of your brain. Awareness, self-respect and discipline are the qualities thereof and action, because everything is motion, everything is movement. There over-activity is the obstacle and illness, followed by aggression. On this side you are restless and without peace. "See me, I am", you tell to every moment and you are hungry for power. You see yourself in the center of the world, tolerating only people of your kind, you think of charity and compassion as weaknesses, and true love is not known to you. But every deed that does not come from love just makes your ego grow; your heart grows hard and hard grow your thoughts. If you are angry, it is only your own anger, just as it is with hate and grief and bitterness. All your deeds and your reactions are just an encounter with yourself. The center does not sway any longer, it has overcome the evil and past and future have lost its meaning. This is now, the present. Whatever you do now is your future, just as what you do not is your future, too. Therefore right deeds of the present are so important as a basis for pure knowledge. Nirmala means pure and Nirmala is the Mantra for the Spirit - and therefore without pure knowledge no desire and no action can have their roots in purity. Here is not hate, not passion, never is there doubt, no fear and no sorrow, too; restlessness cannot grow and insecurity cannot find a place within you. Your speech is full of power and yet your heart is gentle and filled with love. And above the three worlds the Spirit reigns, the light, the goal of all beliefs. There is no time here and not a single thought. As creation's fundament on earth there is a number, a number, preached by able speakers and to which the wise bow their heads. It is given by the Highest of the Highest, born to this world of loving hands. It is the number seven. The seven chakras, the sevenfold light, sowed into everybody who is there. And every light has its quality, the quality of divine being. The first light is purity, the obvious being, it is simplicity and wisdom; and then the second, which is pure knowledge, aesthetics and creativity. A great Spirit, which creates itself, and therefore mastery is the third, generosity and ethics, resigned to God's own will; and dharma, benevolence and satisfaction; within the fourth resides the Atma, rests the self, so full of love and joy; inside the fifth, the power to witness the cosmic play, noble speech, collectivity and perfect discretion; within the sixth, the centre of forgiveness, thoughtless awareness and charity; inside the seventh, heaven, transformation of the worldly into the divine, the unity of all levels, the quietude and bliss. This qualities must be obtained, and the one obtaining them shall be in unity with God. All the commandments of the wise and of the beliefs are like law, for that filth shall not have victory over true freedom. Just as you can cover the windows of your home with filth so that you can no longer see the freedom outside, you can also soil yourself through wrong deeds and actions. You are the one who walks and stands; you are the one who speaks and acts; it is you, always you. At every moment of your life you encounter yourself. Therefore they say: Whatever you do to your brother you do to yourself. It is your self, the divine within you, which tells you so. If you doubt in God, then it is this doubt that locks you out from heaven. And what hinders the holy within you is anger and greed, lust, envy, pride and jealousy. Beware, that no one suffers because of you, because whoever does harm to others, does harm to himself. It is only you, who decides if heaven will open its gates or not. So go to God and offer yourself to Him as a present. Some day you will have a heart beaming of pure light. Then you can go wherever you want and you will carry a love within you, that knows no separation." And Sanaya absorbed himself into God, one, two hours every day and he let happen what only can happen from God's grace. The Holy Ghost came to life inside of him and he felt his cool flow, which was joy and bliss and love without any bounds. The chains of ego loosened and as he tried to wipe away what he was still attached to, he saw how much it was; and he learned that every life means holding on to, and that everybody holds on to different things. He learned that the world’s philosophy has a different meaning for everyone and that there are so many as there are individuals. Could there be something more logic than to seek truth behind those philosophies? He saw and felt greatness in his knowledge. Again the voice appeared: "Only the one has knowledge who never trips over his knowledge, because knowledge is neither big nor small - it is." "You are right, I have no knowledge, I am like winter and I already feel spring." And so it was; Sanaya already had some knowledge of that water he called universe. He had collected a few drops of it and he never stopped collecting them - but still, he was a sugarcube. "If I die now", he thought, "then all this, all that I have learned and experienced, is my world. And so would be my heaven, it would be like a picture with a small piece of truth, and a big piece of illusion - and I would have to return to become the whole truth." And so Sanaya went own looking for this truth, he searched deep inside him and he started to cross all the borders and he became master of time and thoughts; and he recognized eternity and he saw that life is eternal. Meditation no longer was action, it was a state, and all the knowledge and the wisdom, the illusion and the faith disappeared, and he freed himself of religion and philosophy. Like someone climbing a mountain, climbing higher one step at a time, with every step he was able to see more. And as Sanaya arrived on the peak of realization, all over sudden, with one glance he saw everything at once; not only one mountaintop, he saw all the mountaintops of the world; he saw all the seas of the world and every single grain of sand, all lining up to be the desert. And as Sanaya saw, he became one with the divine Being and dissolved himself like a sugarcube in a glass of water, but not only staying on the bottom of it, but at the same time on top and on the bottom, on the left and on the right, and on the centre; he was everywhere at the same time, in every atom, he was in wood and stone, in plant and animal, in earth and water, in air and fire, in space and time, he was in everything and everything was in him - even Ganga, who loved her own body more than her Spirit. And centuries later, again there were two sugarcubes: Diptaya and Aparna, who was his companion. The both of them too were filled with longing for the one who created them, for truth and pure love. Troublesome was their path, yet undaunted and full of hope was their desire to become one with the divine Being. Year after year went by - old grew Diptaya, and old grew Aparna, and as it happened to them finally, they also were everywhere at the same time, and everything was within them, and what Sanaya knew, that also knew Diptaya and Aparna; and after many years, there came a third, a fourth, a fifth, a tenth, how many is of no concern, than for everybody is a place in that which is eternal and perfect, the SAT and CHIT and ANANDA, in divine Truth, in divine Awareness and in divine Love. And again, years after years went by, and as the right time has come, all those who were connected with each other conferred about how to give expression to that force, their master and their leader deeply hidden within each one of them, so that all those who seek could be taught. And that force, which is immortal and shining, beautiful and all-knowing, all-pervading, guiding everything from birth to completion, began to create itself and took with itself the knowledge of the whole divine Being. Alas, it only looked like a sugarcube, but from its fruits everyone whose ears where open to hear, it could be recognized. And whoever wished to feel the Divine within himself, to those the most powerful on earth gave it to them as a present. She came to do that, She came to liberate, to love and to teach - and happy was earth as Her feet touched her. She was the ocean of forgiveness to everyone who asked for forgiveness; and She was the ocean of love to everyone who hoped for love; and She was the ocean of humbleness and charity, and ocean of light and of joy, the ocean of quietude and bliss. Nothing that Her eyes would not see, no heartbeat that She would not see. She was so beautiful and shining, so kind, and so perfect. Wonders happened in numbers, and signs appeared. If one was full of bitterness, soon his heart would be rejoicing and full of joy; lovingly hate and ignorance became knowledge. The greedy gave without grief and the liar forgot about his lying. Wisdom grew within those longing for power, and power within the lazy. The eyes of the dreamer became clear and the angry found his peace, and there was no one without love.
